'Mark as Read' fails after installing Avast!
HOT TIP:
Are you suddenly experiencing problems with Microsoft Outlook failing to indicate that a message has been read?
Some of the symptoms include
- 'Mark as Read' is not set after reading a message
- Unable to manually set the 'Mark as Read' flag
- When forwarding or replying to messages, the message is not marked with the appropriate 'forward' or
'reply' icon
Problem Analysis
The problem occurs because of an update to Avast! Anti-Virus Version 7.0.1456
Microsoft has identified this behavior with Avast! and Outlook in a 'Microsoft Answers' article.
Problem Solution
To work around the problem, change the general behavior of the Avast! Anti-virus mail shield options:
- Uncheck the 'Mark in subject of mail containing a virus' check box
- Uncheck the
'Mark in subject of suspicious mail' check box
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open the Avast! Control Panel by double-clicking the application.
- Select the 'Real-time Shields' tab on the left of the Control Panel.
- Select the 'Mail Shield' sub menu.
- Click on the 'Expert Settings' button
Once in the Mail Shield Settings:
- Select the 'Behavior' tab.
- In the 'General' area, unmark the 'Mark in subject of mail containing a virus'.
- In the 'General' area, unmark the 'Mark in subject of suspicious mail'.
- Press the 'OK' button
- Close Outlook if it is still running.
- Open Outlook again to determine if the problem has been corrected.
This problem was experienced with Outlook 2003, but the problem probably occurs on other versions of Outlook as well.
